The regulations were being amended in Belize in 1999 to criminalize marital rape; the law defines marital rape that takes place at time the spouses are cohabiting far more narrowly than rape in other circumstances; it stipulates that the act is prison if "The act of sexual intercourse is preceded or accompanied by or linked to, assault and battery,
